Humble Beginnings
The history of Wat Lao Buddhavong traces back to its modest origins with seven venerable monks: Phra Achan Chanthy, Phra Achan Bounnkong, Phra Achan Thongphan, Phra Achan Somsack, Phra Achan Bounmy, Phra Achan Chandaphone, and Kuba Phong. In 1980, the monks established a humble residence by renting Nun Phourasamy’s home, creating a foundation for their vision of serving the Lao Buddhist community. This endeavor was made possible through the unwavering support and generosity of local community members and elders, whose dedication played an essential role in bringing the temple to life. Their invaluable contributions reflect the collective spirit and shared commitment that continue to sustain this sacred space. From its inception, Wat Lao Buddhavong was built with the community in mind—providing a place for spiritual enrichment, cultural preservation, and unity.
Growth and Expansion
In 1983, the temple took a significant step forward with the acquisition of a permanent residence in Alexandria, Virginia, strengthening its presence and ability to better serve the growing community.
A year later, in 1984, the temple’s expansion progressed with the acquisition of land in Catlett, Virginia—an essential milestone that laid the groundwork for a larger temple complex to accommodate the needs of the expanding Lao Buddhist community. Through the boundless generosity of supporters, the temple successfully fulfilled its financial obligations within a few years. The completion of vital infrastructure, including the driveway and parking facilities, soon followed—enhancing accessibility and allowing for greater participation in the temple’s growing array of cultural and religious events.
Leadership and Community Support
The temple’s construction and development were guided by the dedicated leadership of Phra Achan Bounmy Kittithammavanno, Phra Achan Chandaphone Mingsisouphanh, and Phra Achan Thongphan Nanthavichith. Their efforts were further strengthened by the unwavering commitment of the Board of Directors—Mr. Souksomboun Sayasithsena, Mr. Somboun Somphanh, Mr. Khamphouth Phanthavong, and Mr. Thong Soumphonphakdy—who also served as trustees. Their collective vision and steadfast dedication, supported by the generosity of the community, have transformed Wat Lao Buddhavong into a cherished spiritual and cultural landmark, serving generations to come.
